Warmer days and nights can bring new challenges when it comes to your baby’s sleep. Whether you’re at home or away, these expert ‘Sleep in the Heat’ tips from Calm & Bright Sleep Support will help you keep baby cool, comfortable and sleeping soundly.
Sleeping Environment
Where possible, keep your baby’s room between 16–20°C. We know this isn’t always achievable in the summer months, so think of this as a guide rather than a rule.
To create a cooler sleep space:
- Use a fan to keep air circulating (positioned away from your baby, not blowing directly on them)
- Close blinds or curtains during the day to reduce heat build-up
- Open windows when it's cooler outside to allow fresh air in
- Always keep the sleep space clear, with no loose bedding, toys or bumpers
Sleepwear
Dressing your baby for sleep can feel tricky in warmer weather – but whether you’re at home or away, the rule stays the same: dress for the room temperature, not the temperature outside.
As a guide:
-
16–20°C: Nappy + sleepsuit + 1.0 TOG
-
21–24°C: Nappy + vest or lightweight sleepsuit
-
25°C+: Nappy or vest + 0.2 TOG (optional)
If you’re using air conditioning:
-
Keep the room comfortably cool, not cold
-
Avoid direct airflow onto your baby
-
Use light, breathable layers rather than heavier clothing
Temperature Checks
To check your baby’s temperature, gently feel their chest or back – this gives a more accurate reading than hands or feet, which can often feel cooler.
